The garden that grows without dirt

The garden that grows without dirt

In the heart of Maize Central Elementary School, right inside the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) lab where Ms. Meister and Ms. Banning teach, something amazing is growing — and it’s not just ideas! Rows of bright green plants stretch toward the light, roots dangling in clear water instead of soil. It’s the school’s very own hydroponic garden, a living science project cared for by our hardworking fourth graders.

Every week, the students measure water levels, check pH, and make sure each plant gets the perfect amount of nutrients. They’ve learned how science, technology, engineering, art, and math all come together to help plants thrive — even indoors!

And when harvest time comes, the whole school gets to share the rewards: fresh, crisp, juicy vegetables grown right here at Maize Central Elementary School. It’s a true team effort — from the 4th graders’ careful hands to the teachers’ guidance to the happy smiles in the cafeteria.

Our hydroponic garden reminds us all that with curiosity, care, and teamwork, we can grow amazing things — even without dirt!
